Greetings from the Friends!

We cordially invite you to join our volunteer organization. Our mission is to promote, support and aid the development and use of library services in the Port Orford area. Be part of an active, vibrant group that offers invaluable services to the community. We hold book sales, a hallway book sale, a holiday bazaar, and summer swap meets. We buy quality children’s books and sponsor quality adult and children’s programs. The Friends tirelessly helped the new Library in 2008 by, for example, raising money for the shelving. We opened the Library Store (south entrance of the library) and run it with dedicated volunteers. The store sells quality books and gift items. All proceeds go to support the Library.

Store hours: 10 am – 2 pm on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and 11 am – 1 pm on Tuesday and Thursday.

President: Maralee Wofford

Vice-President: Sue LaRoche and Therese Menzel

Secretary: Vicki O’Shaugnessy

Volunteers Make It Happen

Dependable volunteers are the mainstay of daily life in local libraries. They are part of the reason libraries are such great places to visit. Volunteers can apply their skills by greeting and assisting patrons, processing and shelving incoming books, or helping with a myriad of other routine tasks too numerous to list. We are thankful for their dedication and hard work.

Some of the people waiting to greet you from the front desk at the Port Orford Library are shown below.

Phyllis Johns is a front desk volunteer, Past-President of the Friends of the Library, Member of the Library Foundation Board and President of the Library District Board. It was the people who made the move to Port Orford years ago so easy for Phyllis and her husband Bob. Phyllis is a Cape Blanco Bell Ringer, a SMART volunteer in the school and an avid woodcarver. Hiking with Gate and Bo, the Schipperkes, looking for agates, and enjoying the beauty of the ocean make the Johns’ family a happy clan.

Penny Suess. Her experience as a freelance writer, love of books, quiet efficiency and charming sense of humor make her the perfect person to help patrons and master all the day-to-day details of running the front desk. She moved to Port Orford in June 2011 and she enjoys collecting and selling toy horses. She is the the mover and shaker behind the book donations and books sales for the Friends’ of the Library.
